Mesothelioma Remission

The term "remission" generally refers to a state of absence of any disease activity among patients with cancer. Doctors typically cite two types of remission, which includes complete remission and partial remission. Complete remission is the total absence of the disease without signs of cancer. Partial remission only indicates shrinkage of the tumor and lessening of the disease.
Mesothelioma Patients and Remission

For mesothelioma patients, remission is certainly less likely to occur. Most cases of mesothelioma are not detected until symptoms arise, which is when the cancer has already reached Stage III or IV of development. Nevertheless, some doctors have reported a handful of cases of both drug and therapy-induced remission. Researchers believe remission after treatment or therapy may be linked to changes in the immune system.

In particular, many long-term survivors of mesothelioma indicate they drastically changed their diet and added daily supplements to enhance their immune system. Many of these same survivors promote the efficacy of alternative treatments as part of their regimen and several have shunned conventional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery.

However, that does not mean conventional treatments should be discounted. There have been a number of cases where mesothelioma patients have experienced remission after chemotherapy. In one case, a 71-year-old Japanese woman with peritoneal mesothelioma went into remission after receiving intraperitoneal injections of the chemotherapy drug Cisplatin. She also received other chemotherapy medications that were administered in the traditional manner. The case, as reported by Yokohama City University School of Medicine, was judged to be quite rare and the disease did return less than a year later. Nevertheless, the woman enjoyed several additional disease-free months.

Today, with the advent of new medications, improved treatments, early detection methods and clinical trials, remissions are becoming more common. Additional money is now being spent on mesothelioma research and support groups nationwide are receiving more donations. Unfortunately, research still has a long way to go in conquering this aggressive disease.

Mesothelioma Nutrition

Mesothelioma Nutrition

Without a current cure for mesothelioma, patients battling the cancer often want to fight it in every way possible. Nutritious eating is a wonderful way to instill mesothelioma hope and equip the immune system with positive fuel. The food and nutrients that we put into our bodies greatly affect our ability to heal and fight disease.
Eating a balanced diet consisting of whole grains, proteins, dairy, fruits and vegetables enables the body to function properly and adequately fight infection and illness. Eating nutritious food while actively fighting mesothelioma through treatment may not cure the cancer, but fighting the disease from every angle will give patients the best possible outlook.
Mesothelioma patients undergoing various treatments may have additional nutritional concerns. Nutrition during chemotherapy is extremely important as the drugs used during treatment kill cancer cells, but simultaneously affect healthy cells as well, leaving the body in a weakened state.
Many patients may experience side effects from the treatment, including nausea and diarrhea. Mild flavored foods such as whole grain toast may settle the stomach and be easier to keep down during treatment. To combat constipation, patients should select foods with a large amount of fiber such as apples, oatmeal and broccoli. Ensuring adequate protein consumption is also important and many patients include egg whites, beans, milk and lean meats in their daily diet.
Patients undergoing radiation therapy may also experience side effects such as vomiting and loss of appetite. Since radiation can zap energy, it is important to eat nutritious foods with healthy calories to fuel the body properly. Limiting the amount of salt, alcohol and caffeine ingested during treatment is also very important. Speaking with a doctor or a nutritionist can help a patient receive guidance about proper nutrition and recommended foods to eat or avoid during radiation.

It is also important for those recovering from cancer to be mindful of their diet. Additional information about nutrition and cancer recovery can be found in the Mesothelioma Cancer and Nutrition

Mesothelioma Prognosis and Survival

Mesothelioma Prognosis and Survival

Though many patients and their loved ones often get discouraged if the prognosis following a mesothelioma diagnosis comes back poor, it is important to remember that a number of patients have survived much longer than their initial prognosis suggested. Prognosis is generally poor because most patients do not exhibit symptoms of mesothelioma until 20 to 50 years after initial exposure to asbestos occurred, allowing the cancer to develop and mature in the body.
The development of tests to aid in early diagnosis, such as the Mesomark blood test, will hopefully help mesothelioma patients receive treatment in the earlier stages of the cancer. Early diagnosis results in greater treatment options available to mesothelioma patients which can greatly improve a patient's prognosis.
Research reveals that mesothelioma patients who have survived for many years with the disease have commonly participated in some sort of therapy to enhance their immune system. Participation in clinical trials in immunology and other alternative therapies relating to the immune system have yielded positive results in some instances.
Researchers theorize that mesothelioma likely results from immune suppression and mesothelioma survivors that participated in treatments to improve the immune system may have experienced positive results because of this participation.

Mesothelioma Cure & Treatments

Mesothelioma Cure

A mesothelioma cure seemed almost unattainable not long ago, but this negative outlook is beginning to change as more cures for cancer are being developed worldwide. Doctors and cancer specialists are constantly working towards the development of a cure and instilling mesothelioma hope in patients. During this search to find mesothelioma cures, stories of survival continue to surface, renewing hope and determination.

Mesothelioma Treatments

While a cure does not currently exist, intensive treatment can often increase the duration of a patient's survival and alleviate some of the pain and suffering associated with mesothelioma. Patients will typically undergo a combination of treatments to combat mesothelioma. Surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are the most widely used treatments, though alternative therapies such as massage and TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), are often administered to aid in pain relief.
A combination of treatments, such as surgery to remove as much of the cancer as possible, used in conjunction with chemotherapy to prevent cancerous cell division, is typically recommended. The stage, or maturity level, at which mesothelioma is diagnosed greatly affects a patient's prognosis and treatment options. The earlier the cancer is found and treated, the more likely a patient will positively respond to treatment.

Mesothelioma Clinical Trials

Many patients elect to participate in clinical trials as a way of building mesothelioma hope. Clinical trials are conducted to test up-and-coming treatments and medications before they are released and recommended to the public as a safe and effective way to treat an illness. The three stages of clinical trials test new drugs extensively, from the correct dosage required to the effectiveness of the drug. To participate in a clinical trial, a patient must first qualify for the study and meet specific qualifications.
Clinical trials are imperative in the search for mesothelioma cures. As results and information are gathered from a study, the knowledge gained helps medical professionals come closer to the discovery of a cure. Each successful clinical trial renews mesothelioma hope for all patients around the world.

Dr. Sugarbaker

Dr. David Sugarbaker, M.D. has taken an active role in the pursuit of better treatment options for mesothelioma patients and a cure for the asbestos-related cancer. Dr. Sugarbaker has been instrumental in the discovery of groundbreaking treatment options and his multi-modal approach to treating the disease has increased survival rates for mesothelioma patients. Dr. Sugarbaker is best known for his innovative treatment approach which involves surgery coupled with radiation and chemotherapy treatments for patients both before and after surgery.
Extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP), a ground-breaking surgical procedure performed by Dr. Sugarbaker, involves the removal of the lung and its coverings and the coverings of the heart and diaphragm. This surgery has resulted in disease-free and long-term survival and yielded the greatest amount of cytoreduction, or decrease in the number of cancerous cells.
Another procedure performed by Dr. Sugarbaker is intracavitary chemotherapy. Though currently under evaluation, the procedure has demonstrated encouraging results for mesothelioma patients. Intracavitary chemotherapy is completed while the patient is in surgery. Surgery to remove the tumor is completed and the chemotherapy is administered into the chest and abdominal cavity, contacting surfaces containing tumor cells and killing them. Healthy cells are preserved as a cytoprotective agent is utilized throughout the procedure.
Dr. Sugarbaker also founded the International Pleural Mesothelioma Program, which focuses on developing new treatment strategies and researching the causes of mesothelioma in effort to aid in the development of improved care for mesothelioma patients.
Progress made by Dr. Sugarbaker and other passionate medical professionals help strengthen mesothelioma hope and keep the search for a cure alive. The research completed on mesothelioma and the studies conducted will help scientists and doctors increase the survival rate of patients as they come closer to the discovery of mesothelioma cures.

Patients can protector their welfare and mesothelioma symptoms and commence archaean find X-ray and CT construe tests. Mesothelioma patients can explore mesothelioma communication options getable in clinical trials and cover these with their physician. Acupuncture

Acupuncture is often used as a palliative therapy, involving the insertion of very narrow needles into the skin at specific pressure points. This has been proven to relieve pain in many individuals suffering from a wide variety of ailments, including mesothelioma.

Aromatherapy

This method of therapy involves the use of aromatic oils, plants, and other substances to be used in conjunction with massage and or baths. These fragrances can result in a heightened mood, which can promote good health and pain relief.

Art Therapy

Art therapy is an alternative therapy than can help cancer patients deal with the physical and emotional challenges that they often experience during treatment.

Biofeedback Therapy

Biofeedback, also known as mind-body therapy, can help individuals diagnosed with mesothelioma manage the pain that is often associated with the disease.

Bowenwork

Bowenwork can help elicit the relaxation response in mesothelioma cancer patients to help lessen the side effects associated with traditional treatments like chemotherapy and radiation.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is an alternative therapy used to help mesothelioma cancer patients manage pain while going through conventional treatments like chemotherapy.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is an alternative treatment that can help manage pain and the side effects of more conventional treatments for mesothelioma.

Dance Therapy

Dance therapy is an expressive method of treatment that helps patients connect with the emotional issues that exist when dealing with a serious illness like mesothelioma cancer.

Emotional Freedom Technique

The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is used as a complementary therapy to other conventional mesothelioma cancer treatments to help relieve pain and anxiety in patients.

Feng Shui

The Chinese practice of Feng Shui recommends making changes to a cancer patient's environment to enhance the flow of Qi. This complementary therapy can support mesothelioma cancer patients throughout their mesothelioma treatment.

Healing and Therapeutic Touch Therapy

Healing Touch Therapy is an emerging therapy that is becoming more widely used by patients battling cancer like mesothelioma. This therapy invokes the relaxation response in patients and can help lessen the negative side effects associated with conventional cancer treatments.

Health Coaching

Health Coaching can help mesothelioma patients enjoy better quality of life, lessen pain and stress and make important lifestyle changes that can help speed up recovery from their cancer treatment.

Herbal & Nutritional Supplements

Many natural herbs have natural medicinal aspects which have been used to treat seemingly incurable ailments. Many times, nutritional Supplements work in conjunction with herbal remedies to provide the body with the necessary vitamins and minerals to fight off infection and other illness.

Homeopathy

Many cancer patients, including those battling malignant mesothelioma, have turned to homeopathy because it is a natural alternative to aggressive conventional cancer treatment drugs and can help manage the adverse side effects associated with them.

Hypnotherapy

Guided hypnosis sessions can have substantial positive effect on a patient undergoing treatment for cancer, including mesothelioma. For this reason, hypnosis is now being increasingly integrated into alternative cancer treatment regimens.

Light Therapy

Light therapy is a complementary therapy that some cancer patients find helpful to throughout the course of their conventional treatment to help reduce pain, stress and anxiety.

Lymph Drainage Therapy

Manual lymph drainage therapy is a technique that uses very gentle manipulation to help reduce swelling in the body after surgery or radiation treatment in mesothelioma cancer patients.

Manual Therapy

Integrative manual therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of therapy that can be very helpful for cancer patients looking to ease pain and anxiety from their illness.

Massage

Massage therapy is the practice of hands-on physical manipulation of the body's soft tissue. Massage can be both relaxing and pain-relieving. Massage methods include Acupressure, Anma, and Balinese, all of which have differing effects on the body. Massage is often used during treatments for certain health conditions, like cancer, to ease muscle tension and induce relaxation.

Meditation

Meditation is the process of moving into deep relaxation. It is therapeutic in the sense that it can help patients develop a calm mind to make sound decisions and be at peace with health conditions they may have, including cancer like mesothelioma.

Music Therapy

Music therapy is a complementary therapy than can help alleviate the uncomfortable side effects of cancer treatment as well as help reduce both chronic and acute pain.

Myofascial Therapy

Myofascial therapy can be used by cancer patients, including those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, to help manage the pain that sometimes accompanies traditional cancer treatment.

Naturopathy

Naturopathy is an alternative paradigm of medicine that focuses on nature's remedy and the body's intrinsic ability to heal itself. Naturopathy favors a holistic approach to treating illnesses like mesothelioma through the use of mineral, diet, and lifestyle-based remedies.

Nutritional Resources

Proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle can prove to be an important factor in the treatment of someone who has been diagnosed with mesothelioma.

Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a complementary therapy that mesothelioma cancer patients find helpful for reducing stress, fatigue and some of the unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy.

Personal Fitness and Training

Maintaining some level of movement can be a tremendous help to cancer patients undergoing treatment and can lead to improved outlook and quality of life. There are personal fitness trainers that are specifically trained to provide this type of support to cancer patients.

Pet Therapy

Pet Therapy, or animal-assisted therapy, utilizes dogs and other animals as a soothing and relaxing modality for patients battling mesothelioma and other cancer.

Reflexology

Foot reflexology is an alternative treatment therapy designed to help mesothelioma cancer patients manage pain.

Reiki

Reiki promotes a deep sense of relaxation and well-being and is an alternative therapy that many mesothelioma cancer patients are now using as part of their overall treatment plan.

Sound Therapy

Some cancer patients welcome the use of more non-invasive therapies, like sound therapy, that can help alleviate the stress and pain that is often associated with more traditional forms of cancer treatment.

TENS Therapy

Transcutaneous Electric Nerve Stimulation is used as a palliative care option. An electrical stimulation is directed through different areas of the body resulting in pain relief which can increase the level of endorphins. TENS Therapy is typically administered by a physical therapist, but can also be done at home if a patient has the necessary documentation for TENS equipment.

Thermography

Thermography, which is a type of medical imaging, can help detect problems in the body, like mesothelioma cancer, and can also aid in monitoring the healing process.

Yoga

Yoga is a combination of meditation and movement. Yoga is of Hindu origin and is designed to promote a heightened sense of oneness between body and mind, inducing relaxation and contentment.

Why should I consider alternative treatment?

When paired with traditional treatment methods, alternative options can be an important component of a mesothelioma treatment plan. These alternative methods are most helpful in controlling pain and maintaining balance and peace within an individual's mind and body. Many patients find treatments, such as massage or meditation, to be a welcome distraction from the ongoing cycle of hospital visits, medication, and general stress associated with a cancer diagnosis.
It is very important to consult with your physician before pursuing any new form of treatment. A doctor will be able to determine whether or not a patient is healthy enough to incorporate alternative treatment practices into their already-established treatment plan.

Stage 4 Mesothelioma

In order to evaluate the extent and nature of any kind of cancer, inclucing mesothelioma cancer, oncologists use a rubric or "staging" system. This is only one of the criteria used to classify malignancies. Additional criteria include is the location of the tumor and identification of the mesothelioma cell types.
Staging assists mesothelioma doctors in determining how far the asbestos cancer has advanced and what mesothelioma treatment would be appropriate.
Although there are three distinct staging systems currently in use, all three are based on four primary stages:
  • The tumor in stage 1 mesothelioma is confined to one organ or region and is relatively small.
  • The tumor in stage 2 mesothelioma has grown in size, and has spread to one other tissue.
  • The tumor in stage 3 mesothelioma has spread to adjacent areas.
  • The tumor in stage 4 mesothelioma has spread to distant areas of the body, or "metastasized."
In Stage 4, the cancer has spread throughout the body and mesothelioma life expectancy is not long.

Butchart System

This is the oldest system used by oncologists, and is used only for patients diagnosed with the pleural variety of mesothelioma. In Stage 4 under the Butchart System, the cancer has spread via the blood stream and can be found throughout parts of the body remote from the tumor's point of origin.

TMN System

TNM stands for Tumor, Lymph Nodes, and Metastasis. This is a newer method which is usually employed for staging malignant pleural mesothelioma, although it is also used for peritoneal mesothelioma as well.
Under this system, the cancer has spread well beyond the original site and into the neck as well as the lymphatic system.

Brigham System

This is the newest staging system, which was developed especially for use in cases of mesothelioma.
In Stage 4 of the Brigham System, the cancer is inoperable. Tumors are either be too large to remove surgically or have penetrated deep into vital organs. The cancer has metastasized to that point that malignant cells can be found throughout the patient's body, so that even if some of it can be removed, the cancer will almost certainly recur elsewhere.

Prognosis

By Stage 4, the mesothelioma prognosis is identified as terminal, and the patient has less than a year to live in most cases. At this point, doctors focus on quality of life issues, offering palliative treatments that can at the very least reduce patient discomfort and pain.

Stage 3 Mesothelioma

When determining the extent and nature of any kind of cancer, including mesothelioma - oncologists and mesothelioma doctors use a rubric or "staging" system. This is only one of the criteria by which malignancies are classified, the first of which is determined by the location of the tumor and the third of which is determined by the mesothelioma cell types.
Staging assists the oncologist in determining how far the asbestos cancer has advanced and how treatable the patient's malignancy really is.
Although there are three distinct staging systems currently in use, all three are based on four primary mesothelioma stages:
  • In stage 1 mesothelioma, the tumor is confined to one organ or region and is relatively small.
  • In stage 2 mesothelioma, the tumor has grown in size, and has spread to one other tissue.
  • In stage 3 mesothelioma, the tumor has spread to adjacent areas.
  • In stage 4 mesothelioma, the tumor has spread to distant areas of the body, or "metastasized."

Butchart System

This is the oldest system used by oncologists, and is used only for patients diagnosed with the pleural variety of mesothelioma. In Stage 3, the cancer has spread from the pleural lining to the abdomen. The entire lymphatic system may also be involved at this point.

TMN System

TNM stands for Tumor, Lymph Nodes, and Metastasis. This is a newer method which is usually employed for staging malignant pleural mesothelioma, although it is also used for peritoneal mesothelioma as well.
Under Stage 3 of this system, the cancer has metastasized from the pleural lining into the heart, ribs, esophagus, and other vital organs. At this point, the lymphatic system has definitely been affected.

Brigham System

This is the newest staging system, which was developed especially for use in cases of mesothelioma. Under Stage 3 of the Brigham System, the cancer is inoperable due to its spread into other areas. Tumors may be located in inaccessible areas, or may be too widespread. In addition, the cancer has affected the lymphatic system.

Prognosis

By the time the disease has reached Stage 3, the mesothelioma prognosis is grim. Even if the primary tumor can be removed, cancer cells have most likely spread to other areas, and a mesothelioma remission or mesothelioma cure is not probable. At this point, palliative treatments that can reduce pain and make the patient more comfortable during his/her final days are the generally the only viable options.

Stage 2 Mesothelioma

When determining the extent and nature of any kind of cancer including mesothelioma - which in turn, plays a large part in designing an appropriate course of mesothelioma treatment - oncologists use a rubric or "staging" system. This is only one of the criteria by which malignancies are classified, the first of which is determined by the location of the tumor and the third of which is determined by the cellular structure (or lack thereof).
Staging assists the oncologist in determining how far the mesothelioma cancer has advanced and how treatable the patient's malignancy really is.
Although there are three distinct staging systems currently in use, all three are based on four primary stages:
  • The tumor is confined to one organ or region and is relatively small.
  • The tumor has grown in size, and has spread to one other tissue.
  • The tumor has spread to adjacent areas.
  • The tumor has spread to distant areas of the body, or "metastasized."

Butchart System

The Butchart System is the oldest rubric used by oncologists, and is employed only in cases of pleural Mesothelioma. The tumor's Butchart classification primarily describes the size of the tumor. Under this rubric, the tumor has spread from its point of origin to the other side of the body, or to an adjacent tissue such as the pericardium.

TNM System

TNM stands for Tumor, Lymph Nodes, and Metastasis. This is a fairly new rubric that is also used in staging malignant mesothelioma. This system describes not only the size of the tumor, but also the extent of metastasis and whether or not the lymph nodes are involved.
In TNM Stage 2, the cancer may have spread to adjacent tissues such as the diaphragm and/or the pericardial lining; however, the main criterion is that it has by this point affected the lymph nodes.

Brigham System

The Brigham System is the most recently developed rubric for use with mesothelioma diagnosis. Under Stage 2 of this particular system, the tumor is still operable ("resectable"), but has spread to the lymph nodes.

Prognosis

In most cases, mesothelioma is not detected until it has reached Stage 3 or 4 - by which time a mesothelioma cure or a mesothelioma remission is not likely and all that can be done is attempt to make the patient more comfortable.
The new MESOMARK™ diagnostic test may enable pathologists to detect the disease at earlier stages, however. Recently approved for use in the U.S. by the FDA, this test was developed by a Japanese biotech firm and is reportedly able to detect the early biological markers of malignant mesothelioma. At Stage 1, the tumor can usually be removed via mesothelioma surgery; radiation and mesothelioma chemotherapy treatments are used to follow up in order to get rid of any traces of malignancy.

Stage 1 Mesothelioma

When determining the extent and nature of any kind of cancer - which in turn, plays a large part in designing an appropriate cancer treatment - oncologists use a rubric or "staging" system. This is only one of the criteria by which malignancies are classified, the first of which is determined by the location of the tumor and the third of which is determined by the cellular structure (or lack thereof).
Staging assists the oncologist in determining how far the cancer has advanced and how treatable the patient's malignancy really is.
In Stage 1, mesothelioma is localized and confined to one area of the body.

Butchart System

This is the oldest system used by oncologists, and is used only for patients with a mesothelioma diagnosis of the pleural form. In Stage 1 under the Butchart System, the tumor is relatively small and confined to one side of the lung cavity; it may also be present on the diaphragm on the same side.

TNM System

TNM stands for Tumor, Lymph Nodes, and Metastasis. This is a newer method which is usually employed for staging malignant pleural mesothelioma, although it is also used for other types as well including peritoneal mesothelioma.
Under this system, the mesothelioma cancer is located on one side or the other, and may also be present on the diaphragm as well as the pericardium (lining of the heart). It is however not present in the lymph nodes.

Brigham System

This is the newest staging system, which was developed especially for use with mesothelioma diagnosis. Under Stage 1 of the Brigham system, the cancer is operable and lymph nodes remain unaffected.

Prognosis

The main problem for mesothelioma patients is that historically, their condition is not detected until it has reached Stage 3 mesothelioma or Stage 4 mesothelioma - by which time it is too late to offer anything other than palliative treatments.
One ray of hope lies in the new MESOMARK™ diagnostic test recently approved for use in the U.S. by the FDA. This test was developed by a Japanese biotech firm and is reportedly able to detect the early biological markers of mesothelioma when it is most treatable and has the best chances for a mesothelioma cure. When the disease is caught at Stage 1, the cancerous tissue can usually be removed with mesothelioma surgery; mesothelioma radiation and chemotherapy treatments are used to follow up in order to get rid of any traces of malignancy.

Mesothelioma Stages

Mesothelioma Stages
How is mesothelioma staged?
Staging is the process of finding out how far the cancer has spread. Staging of mesothelioma is based on imaging studies such as x-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans. The mesothelioma treatment and life expectancy for patients with the disease largely depends on the stage (extent of spread) of their cancer. Since pleural mesothelioma occurs most frequently and has been studied the most, it is the only mesothelioma for which a staging classification exists.

Mesothelioma Staging Systems

Today, there are three primary staging systems used to assess how far mesothelioma cancer has spread and each system uses four stages to describe the progression of the disease. It is the definition of each stage within the various systems that can vary slightly.

Butchart Staging System

The staging system most often used for mesothelioma cancer is the Butchart system and is focused on defining the location of the primary tumor mass in body for each stage. The system doesn’t address how many cancer cells are present, how big the tumor is or the level of cancer present in the body overall.

TNM Staging System

The TNM Staging System, developed by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC), is similar to staging systems used for other types of cancer. It considers the characteristics of the tumor (T), whether or not lymph nodes are involved (N) and if the cancer has metastasized to other locations in the body (M).

Brigham Staging System

The Brigham Staging System also has four stages of progression and is very similar to the TNM Staging System. The primary difference between the two is that in addition to defining the location of the tumor, and assessing lymph node involvement and the presence of metastatic disease, the Brigham System also helps assess the possibility for and effectiveness of surgical intervention at each stage.

Mesothelioma Resources: Cancer Support Information

Mesothelioma Resources: Cancer Support Information

Whenever a person is diagnosed with cancer, a number of emotions will undoubtedly be running through their head. Support can be a key component to surviving cancer because it gives the cancer patient much-needed emotional and psychological confidence. For this purpose, cancer support groups are especially effective. These are groups that provide empathy in that they foster a setting where cancer patients are encouraged to open up about enduring cancer, mainly with other cancer patients who know what they are experiencing.

Types of Cancer

Cancer is a disease that comes in many shapes, sizes, and severity levels. Each different type of cancer attacks the cancer patient in a different manner; this is usually manifested in the various physical as well as emotional reactions of patients. For instance, colorectal cancer is the third-leading cause of death by cancer in the world and the fourth most common cancer in the US. A common physical reaction is blood in the stool and a sense of unsatisfactory elimininations. Since the treatment of this form of cancer includes surgery and radiation, that can wear down a patient’s emotional state of mind. Surgery can leave patients disfigured, and chemotherapy and radiation can induce hair loss, nausea, cramps and fatigue, all of which work to compound a patient’s already diminished health and even induce depression.
Other common types of cancer—like breast cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer and prostate cancer, to name a few—also bring about physical and emotional reactions. For instance, bladder cancer causes physical pain during urination and the appearance of blood in the urine. Emotionally, patients enduring bladder cancer will likely suffer the same psychological tribulations that colorectal cancer patients experience. Treatment for bladder cancer involves chemotherapy and surgery. Both will leave patients enduring a lot of aggravation that may make them feel discouraged due to feeling worse than at the actual time of diagnosis.

Helping Children Cope with Cancer

When children are struck with cancer, they are generally more vulnerable due to them not having the same coping mechanism as adults. However, children are often capable of overcoming more than what their parents may think them able to, which can be attributed to the resilience of the human spirit. A recommended course of action in helping children deal with having cancer is to address their emotional and psychological side. A strong psyche during the experience of cancer is quite important since morale and the right attitude play a role in the success of overcoming cancer. Children who have cancer may benefit from a myriad of different forms of therapy. In example, art therapy has been shown to have positive effects in children who suffer the disease.
Art therapy involves nothing more than having children who are afflicted with cancer draw out their feelings. This is a cathartic process that allows children to do two things. First, they are able to express themselves, and when they do, they are able to look at themselves and their cancer ordeal in a different way. Secondly, art therapy also allows parents and other people to observe exactly just how children are feeling in such a situation. Successful approaches to helping children deal with having cancer relate to looking at children as more than just patients who are suffering cancer. Successfully dealing with children who have cancer entails a wellness model that centers on treating children as whole persons.

Helping Families Cope Cancer Diagnosis in a Loved One

Sometimes, helping families cope with a loved one who has cancer can be even more challenging than dealing with cancer on your own. This is because the families are so over-invested in emotion with a family member, that it compounds their pain and suffering. Families should be told about the health problems of their loved one as soon as possible, and complete honesty about their loved one’s exact illness and prognosis is integral to effective care. Otherwise, the trust that is so important in a family dynamic, especially one where a loved one is facing a serious illness, will be broken and hard to rebuild.
Another aspect of helping families deal with a loved one with cancer requires education in the form of the afflicted patient discussing their illness with family members and loved ones. In these dialogues, cancer patients can prepare their families to become more familiar with specialized terms and words that they will be hearing more of as treatment progresses. Such education can be comforting to families because it will make them feel as though they have a real understanding of the looming problems that those stricken with cancer will experience.

Support Groups

Support groups were designed as a source of both strength and comfort in helping cancer patients cope both psychologically and emotionally during their battle with cancer. Support groups for cancer are designed in much of the same sociological construction that other support groups are. Today, a myriad of cancer support groups exists, ranging from online support groups to charitable organizations, forums to networks, and family support structures.
Cancer support groups are essential in helping an individual begin to cope with the various and oncoming stages of the cancer process. Community support groups for cancer are commonly guided by professionals such as psychologists, doctors, or even social workers; these kinds of groups routinely are held in hospitals, churches or community gathering centers. The kinds of support groups available are diverse: Sometimes, support groups are established specifically to address patients who are burdened with a particular type of cancer, while other groups are established to handle patients who are dealing with any form of cancer.
Cancer support addresses the psychological and emotional aspects of persons afflicted with cancer. Sometimes, these very real needs are overshadowed as not being as important as the physical need of recovering from cancer, but good cancer therapy will also focus on psychological and emotional aspects of cancer patients. A good portion of the experience of cancer deals with having the right, mental attitude, and obtaining the right cancer support is certainly a crucial part of recovery.

Cancer Resource: Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that develops in the lining of the organs and internal body cavity, a membrane known as the mesothelium. The main cause of mesothelioma is prolonged exposure to asbestos, which has been used in the construction industry, shipbuilding, and even in vehicle brakes. The most common place inside the body where mesothelioma occurs is the outer lining of the lungs but it can also occur in the lining of the heart, the membrane of the abdominal cavity, and the tunica vaginalis. Mesothelioma was first recognized in the 18th century, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that the causes and characteristics of the disease were more fully understood.
Mesothelioma is an extremely aggressive and painful malignancy, causing pain and discomfort in locations such as the chest and abdomen. Other symptoms of the disease include blood in the patient's cough, fluid effusion in patient's lung, shortness of breath, fatigue and wheezing. If the cancer is not detected early enough, it could metastasize (spread to other organs in the body), and develop into extensive disease. The majority of mesothelioma cancers do not spread to the brain, bones, or the adrenal glands. Other signs and symptoms that many mesothelioma patients suffer from include any of the following:
  • Pain in the chest or abdomen
  • Weight loss
  • Bowel obstruction
  • Low blood sugar levels
  • Blood clotting
  • Jaundice
  • Severe internal bleeding
Diagnosis of mesothelioma can be difficult for most medical professionals because the signs and symptoms are so closely related to those of other thoracic diseases and malignancies. Doctors will rely on the patient to provide them with any information regarding a working history with asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral that was used in a number of different industrial capacities as an insulation and durability component until being regulated in the late 1970s.
There are four types of mesothelioma: pleural (which accounts for 75 percent of all cases and surrounds the lining of the lungs), peritoneal (which forms in the lining of the abdominal cavity and accounts for roughly 10 to 20 percent of all cases), pericardial (which occurs in the membrane of the heart and occurs only in one to five percent of all cases) and testicular (which occurs in the lining around the testicles and is the rarest form, with only 100 cases ever recorded).
The three most common methods of treatment for mesothelioma include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Depending on the size of the tumor and the location, the patient may elect to use either one or more of these methods to effectively treat the disease. There is no cure for mesothelioma.

The Mesothelioma Concern

9/11 Asbestos
Nearly all Americans remember where they were when they heard that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center Towers. Many had tuned in to see what happened just in time to see the second plane crash into the second tower and all watched in horror as the buildings burned, shuddered and then crumpled. Media and private individuals captured horrific images of people jumping from the buildings to avoid the flames. Cameras caught emergency personnel running toward the disaster and into the buildings when the collapse came. When the massive towers came down, huge clouds of dust, fumes and toxic particles billowed out and blanketed the majority of lower Manhattan. It was quickly determined that terrorists had taken control of commercial aircraft and had deliberately crashed them into the World Trade Center towers and Pentagon, while missing another unknown target when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania. The events of September 11th shook Americans to the core. The aftermath continues to affect the daily lives of Americans even today.

9/11 Asbestos

Asbestos in the WTC

Those emergency workers that rushed towards the danger were rushing towards more than a building in flames. When the towers collapsed, the resulting cloud of dust particles and fumes enveloped and covered everything and everyone for blocks around. As the dust settled, firemen, policemen and medical personnel continued their rescue efforts. Even as days, weeks and months passed by, the effort to retrieve missing persons continued. The repercussions from inhaling the asbestos-contaminated dust began immediately, but the long term effects are still being determined nine years later. Building materials that contain the minute minerals that are known carcinogens were reduced to powder in the collapse, blanketing lower Manhattan and permeating everything in a several block radius around Ground Zero. Breathing in this asbestos dust caused those who were already prone to respiratory distress to begin exhibiting symptoms immediately, while others began developing symptoms weeks, months, and even years afterwards.

What is Asbestos?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used in a wide variety of applications because of its physical properties. It was used in many building materials and is especially utilized as an insulator due to its fireproof nature. The thin fibers can cause serious damage when inhaled and are a known cause of malignant lung cancers, mesothelioma and chronic respiratory disease like asbestosis. Although asbestos is naturally present in the atmosphere, long term exposure greatly increases the risks associated with it. Because of its tensile strength, insulation qualities and widespread availability, contractors began utilizing it in a variety of ways in the 19th century. The fibrous nature made it a natural additive to cement, which made the cement stronger. It was used as insulation and as covering for wiring in electrical applications. When the destructive nature of the mineral became known, asbestos was banned. However, existing structures that contain asbestos, still present a hazard. Standards concerning the safe removal and disposal of asbestos have been developed but the collapse of the twin towers unleashed a toxic layer of dust containing asbestos particles.

What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that develops in the protective lining of internal organs. The most common area of occurrence is in the protective membrane which surrounds, but it can also form in the lining of the abdominal cavity, heart, and metastasize throughout the body. It most commonly occurs in people who have been exposed to asbestos in industrial settings. Symptoms include difficulty breathing because of fluid build-up in the lungs, chest pain, and a noticeable failure to thrive resulting in weight loss. Tests such as CT scans can help identify the cancer and traditional cancer treatments are used to manage the disease, but the cancer is aggressive and prognosis is generally poor.

Health Effects Years After 9/11

The long term effects of exposure to asbestos at Ground Zero are still being studied. Preexisting respiratory illnesses and the smoking could cause exposure to become more dangerous than in otherwise healthy persons. However, incidences of mesothelioma in persons directly impacted by the clouds from the tower are in higher concentrations than those of the general population with the exception of mining communities.
